Fairview traveled through the snow to Parma on Monday night to take on a tough Redmen squad. The Lady Warriors gutted it out to take the Win in what turned into an overtime thriller. Both teams competed hard and it was a back and forth game all night long — the score never more than 4 points apart after any quarter.
The Warriors came up big when it mattered most. They had an impressive defensive stand to close out the 3rd quarter with 14 seconds on the clock out of a Parma time out. The Redmen couldn’t get a shot off. Then again in the 4th with the score knotted at 46 and 25 seconds on the clock, the Lady Warriors got a stop and a turnover. They inbounded and went the length of the floor in 4 seconds with Julia Costas’ contested layup coming up just short.
The teams headed into over time and were both scoreless until the 3:14 mark when Julia Costas sunk two free throws out of a 1 and 1. It was a back and forth game for the next minute and a half; however, the Lady Warriors established control with 1:50 to go as Costas assisted on a Gabby Biggs lay in.
The Dynamic Duo of Gabby Biggs and Lizzy Williams came up with two huge defensive rebounds to regain possession and led to Warrior buckets; Biggs’ board came at the 53.6 mark while Williams controlled the glass with 22.3 seconds and got fouled. Williams would sink one of two free throws to give the Warriors a two point lead.
It was a 3 point game with 14.2 seconds left and the Warriors mounted another defensive stand capped off by a MONSTER block by Julia Costas on what would have been the tying 3-pointer in the corner. With a heads up play, Costas kept the ball inbounds and took it the length of the floor where she would get fouled on a layup try. Costas went a cool 5/6 from the charity stripe in overtime (10/12 for the game) to ice it.
Costas led all scorers with 23 points to go along with 9 RBDS, 4 AST, and 4 STL while the Warrior squad put together a balanced offensive attack. Lizzy Williams had 8 PTS and 6 RBD; Jada Witnik caught fire in the 2nd quarter to add 8 PTS and 4 RBD; Gabby Biggs chipped in 6 PTS and 8 RBD; Meghan Weir had 5 PTS and 4 RBD to go along with a charge; Lindsey Hill added 4 PTS and 1 charge; while Rachel Coyne made hustle play after hustle play to earn extra possessions for the Warrriors; she had 4 STL, 1 blocked shot, and took 2 charges.
A great TEAM win for the Lady Warriors to go 2-0 on the season. They will host Valley Forge on Wednesday night for their home opener. Tip off is at 7:30pm.
