Gates Mills, Ohio- Playoff feeling was looming through the air of Hawken Upper School as the Hawks and the Warriors were set for a Sectional Semi-Final clash. When the dust settled after four quarters, it was the Hawks who had prevailed, as they defeated the Warriors 46-31.
The first quarter started off as a back-and-forth thriller. Both teams played some hard defense and it was hard to get some offense going. The Hawks would be the one to take the lead first and that would stand throughout the quarter as they didn’t give it up and led 9-8 after one. Makayla White would lead Hawken with five points while Jada Witnik led Fairview with four.
The second quarter would start out like the first quarter as both teams had to grab some hard-fought buckets. However, Hawken would grab some momentum and grab some big offensive boards, picking up a string of second-chance points at the end of the second quarter. This propelled them to a 22-15 advantage at the half. Maya Dori would lead the Hawks with six as she knocked down two big threes, while Fairview was led by Leila Discenza with four.
The third quarter however would rear its head and that is where Fairview has consistently throughout the season fell apart. Wednesday night was no different as they were outscored by ten in the quarter. Hawken would dominate the offensive glass, racking up second-chance points. They would lead 41-24 after the third. White had a big quarter for the Hawks as she racked up seven points, while Fairview was paced by Discenza with five.
Both teams kept the starters out for a bit but eventually emptied the benches allowing some of the younger girls to get some playoff minutes. Hawken would take the game 46-31. The Hawks would get a nice game from Makayla White as she had fourteen. Fairview was led by senior Maeve Mesaros with ten points in her last game while Leila Discenza added nine.
With the win, Hawken moves to 13-2 and extending their win streak to twelve games. They move on and will host the nineteenth seeded Cloverleaf Colts in Sectional Final action Saturday. Fairview finishes off an up and down season at 1-20. Congrats to Seniors Maeve Mesaros and Jada Witnik on their basketball careers at Fairview High School.
