Bay Village, Ohio- Despite playing their best game of the season, the Warriors fell to the Bay Rockets 56-33 Saturday afternoon. The Warriors were coming into the game after losing their opening 2 games to Brecksville-Broadview Heights and Normandy on Monday and Wednesday night respectively. Bay was coming in after winning their opener to Holy Name previously.
The first quarter was a tightly fought affair and by far the best quarter of basketball the girls played so far this season. They slowed the tempo down and limited turnovers while also scoring the ball which have been problems for the Warriors so far this season and in the past. Last season the Warriors had one of the least efficient offenses in the GLC but they looked much different in the first. They would lead 11-10 after one. Leila Discenza would lead the Warriors with 4 in the first.
The beginning of the second quarter was much like the first. Hard fought, solid basketball by both sides. Neither team had any easy buckets for the most part. But then down the stretch, the wheels started to fall off for the Warriors. Bay started to pull away with an 11-0 run. The tempo of the game increased and with that Fairview turned the ball over frequently. Bay would head into the locker room with a 27-19 lead at the half. Discenza would lead the Warriors in the quarter with 3 points.
Bay would absolutely suffocate the Warriors on defense in the third quarter allowing only 5 points. Fairview couldn’t get a shot to fall while Bay would go to work on offense. They would extend their lead to 41-24 going into the fourth quarter. Elizabeth Hille would have 3 for the Warriors while Alice Chambers would score the other 2.
The fourth would be a little better for the Warriors on offense but they just couldn’t stop the Bay offense and they would cruise the rest of the way and lock up the victory 56-33. Alice Chambers had 4 and finished with 8 points off the bench while Leila Discenza finished with 9 points. Maeve Mesaros would lead the team in rebounds.
The Warriors drop to 0-3 (0-2 GLC) on the year with that loss. They will have another crack at their first win on Monday night when they head off to Cuyahoga Heights where they will take on the Redskins. Bay moves to 2-0 (2-0 GLC) and will take on EC on Wednesday.
