The Lady Warriors traveled to Brookside on Saturday to take on the 4-1 Cardinals. Fairview came out of the gate swinging as they took an early 8-1 lead fueled Rachel Coyne’s continued success from 3-point land and an and-one play by Julia Costas.
Brookside battled back, however, and the score was 10-9 Fairview after the 1st Quarter. The 2nd Quarter started slow until about midway through when the Warriors picked up the intensity on the defensive end. Brookside struggled to handle the Warriors full court pressure; the forced turnovers and stops led to success on the offensive end for Fairview. Good ball movement opened things up for Coyne who continued to knock down timely shots from the perimeter – she went 4/9 on the day. The Warriors held Brookside scoreless in the 2nd and took an 18-9 lead into halftime.
The Cardinals made a push early in the 3rd quarter to cut the Warrior lead down to 3, but a Coyne steal and assist in transition to Julia Costas was enough to get the Warriors rolling again. Costas would score 6 straight to create separation and then continued to pick apart the Cardinal defense in the 4th where she scored 9 of her game high 19 points to go along with 12 boards.
The Fairview squad played aggressive, team defense throughout the remainder of the game which forced Brookside into some rushed shots and turnovers. The Cardinals couldn’t close the gap as Rachel Coyne went a cool 5/6 from the charity stripe while Costas added 3 more freebies. The tandem of Costas and Coyne tallied 36 points, while Gabby Biggs added 4 and Lindsey Hill chipped in 2.
The Lady Warriors are now 6-1 on the season (2-1 PAC) and look to extend their streak to 4 straight on Wednesday night when they host Brooklyn. JV tips at 6:00pm, Varsity at 7:30. Be there!
