The leadership of Fairview Softball has a new look. At the conclusion of what should have been the 2020 Spring Season, Darrin Laughlin resigned his post after being at the helm for 4 seasons. The hiring process, delayed by the restraints caused by the pandemic, began early this Fall and concluded with the hiring of Peter Viola as the Warrior’s newest Head Coach and Alexandra Dick to serve as his Varsity Assistant.
Peter Viola comes to Fairview in the midst of a relocation from South Florida. He brings with him a vast playing and coaching career that started at Columbia University where he was a four year starter at 2nd Base for the Columbia Lions from 1990-1993 and served as Co-Captain his Senior Year in 1993. Upon graduation from Columbia, Viola began his career teaching Social Studies and coaching interscholastic athletics in New York in 1994. Over the course of his career, Peter has taught in New York, New Mexico, Texas, and Florida, and has coached Soccer, Basketball, Baseball and Softball at various locations and times.
Most recently, Mr. Viola has taught Honors and AP US History at Western High School in the Broward County School District in St. Davie, Florida since 2012. He founded the North Miami Beach Landcrab Baseball Academy in 2011 and has served as the head of that program since 2011.
Assisting Mr. Viola in this transition and serving as his Assistant Varsity Coach is Alexandra Dick. Alex is a graduate and Softball alumna of Elyria High School (2015) and Baldwin Wallace University (2019). She graduated from BW in 2019 with a Bachelor’s Degree in English and a Minor in AYA (Grades 7-12) Education and, in the Fall of 2020 began her first year of teaching at North Ridgeville High School.
“I’m very excited to enter into this season with a veteran head coach and a young, fresh new (to me) program. This will offer us great opportunities for player and program growth,” said Alex. As an athletic department we are excited about the combination of experience and eagerness to build a strong program that both Peter and Alex will bring to the program.
If you are interested in playing Softball and meeting the coaches, there will be a (socially distanced and safe) meeting in the High School Auditorium at 3:30pm on Thursday.
