OHSAA Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award

2019-20

Sportsmanship, ethics and integrity are essential components of any successful athletic program. As part of an ongoing program to promote Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity, the Ohio High School Athletic Association would like to recognize students who display exemplary sportsmanship. This award is named for Archie Griffin. Mr. Griffin is an Ohio native, the only two-time recipient of the Heisman Trophy for football, and as a professional athlete, he always displayed exemplary sportsmanship. Mr. Griffin, current CEO of The Ohio State University Alumni Association, has been active in promoting sportsmanship, ethics and integrity for many years. He was honored in 1998 as the recipient of the prestigious OHSAA Ethics and Integrity Award.

Guidelines for awarding this certificate are as follows:

  • The award recipient should be students and does not need to be an athlete.
  • The school may select two students. It is recommended that schools with both genders select at least one male and one female student.
  • Criteria and method of selection is entirely the decision of the school administrator.

OHSAA Courageous Student Award

2019-20

The Ohio High School Athletic Association continues to disseminate a “Courageous Student” award to be made available to every OHSAA member high school. Each high school may present this certificate to One deserving individual in their local school.

Suggested guidelines for selection:

  1. A student who either currently has, or who has overcome, a serious illness, injury, or disability.
  2. A student who has overcome great adversity in a positive way (challenging social or family situation).
  3. A student who has gone far beyond normal in assisting a fellow student, family member or friend.
  4. Other extraordinary situations, where a student has displayed tremendous courage against overwhelming odds.

This award is intended to bring credit to a very special student who has been involved in, or supportive of, the interscholastic athletic program, and who deserves recognition for courage. This award is not designed to specifically recognize special education students; however, they should not be excluded should their situation merit consideration.
